CROWN BOOKS CORPORATION ANNOUNCES SALES

 LANDOVER, Md., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenn E. Hemmerle, president and chief executive officer of Crown Books Corporation (NASDAQ: CRWN), announced sales for the 13 weeks ended July 31, 1993 increased 12 percent to $60,150,000. For the 26 weeks ended July 31, 1993 sales increased 11 percent to $114,650,000. These increases were primarily attributable to increased sales for Super Crown Book stores open less than one year. Sales for stores open more than 15 months decreased 1 percent and 2 percent for the 26 and 13 weeks ended July 31, 1993. Sales for Super Crown Books stores represented 32 percent and 34 percent for the 26 and 13 weeks ended July 31, 1993 compared to 18 percent for the three and six months last year.
 Crown operates 245 book stores, including 38 Super Crown stores, in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area; California; Houston, Texas, Chicago and Seattle, Wash., compared with 250 stores, including 16 Super Crown stores, in operation one year ago.
