CROP GENETICS INTERNATIONAL RELEASES FIELD RESULTS

COLUMBIA, Md., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Crop Genetics International (NASDAQ: CROP) (CGI) said tests of its corn borer insecticide, conducted jointly with Zeneca Limited, achieved good control of the target pest but that suppression of the insect did not result in an improvement in corn yields.
Based on these results and other research priorities, Zeneca and CGI said they will not conduct additional corn borer trials next summer but the companies are exploring other uses of the InCide(R) Technology.
Joe Kelly, CEO of Crop Genetics, said, "We were pleased by the excellent insect control achieved in these trials, but disappointed that the economic yield benefit we had hoped for was not observed. It is difficult to predict what effect, if any, the unusually cool wet weather in the Midwest may have had on these trials." Corn yields across the Midwest were significantly lower than usual.
"At this point in time, we are focusing on our nearer-term technologies which should produce an earlier return on our investment. We feel that this is a more prudent allocation of our resources," said Kelly. In addition to the corn project, CGI is producing insect virus products for DuPont, developing a biological herbicide, and exploring other biopesticidial uses of the InCide(R) Technology.
Crop Genetics International is engaged in the discovery, basic development and manufacture of environmentally safe biopesticides.
