CREME DE LA CREME OF BANKING
CORAL GABLES, Fla., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Bauer Financial

Reports, Inc, a Coral Gables, Fla., bank and thrift financial research firm reports that 878 banks and 534 savings associations (S&Ls) have each received Bauer's highest five-star rating since the inception of the awards.
The 534 thrifts each received a five-star rating for 14 consecutive quarters (3 1/2 years). They represent 23.62 percent of the total of thrifts operating nationwide.
A five-star rating, for the safest savings associations in the country, indicates that the thrift's tangible capital exceeds 6.25 percent of tangible assets, its risk-based capital ratio exceeds 9.25 percent, that there are no excessive delinquencies or repossessed assets and that the association operates profitably.
The 878 commercial banks each received a five-star rating for 12 consecutive quarters (3 years). They represent 7.27 percent of the banks operating in the country.
A five-star rating for banks is earned when tangible capital exceeds 9.0 percent of tangible assets, the risk-based capital ratio exceeds 9.25 percent, delinquencies and repossesed assets are manageable, the bank is soundly invested and operates profitably.
Although the tangible capital ratio requirements for banks and thrifts differ, the risk-based capital ratio requirement, which measures the degree of credit risk in the loan portfolio against capital adequacy, is identical for both groups.
