CRAYOLA CELEBRATES 90 YEARS OF COLORWITH BIGGEST 'DRAW' IN CRAYON HISTORY

EASTON, Pa., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Can you do better than burnt sienna?
Got any ideas crisper than cornflower, carnation pink or atomic tangerine? Well, this may be your chance.
To commemorate its 90th birthday, the maker of Crayola crayons is dangling immortality in front of crayon lovers across the country by giving them a chance to name 16 new crayon colors. The new hues are included in a 96 box of crayons, the largest assortment ever introduced by the crayon maker.
To name the new colors, crayonists young and old (there are no age restrictions) need to impress experts at Crayola who, since 1903, have draped monikers like periwinkle, bittersweet and cerulean around their famous wax sticks. Once chosen, new names will appear on an estimated 20 million crayons a year, ensuring the name's author a place in crayon annals. In addition, contest winners' personal names will appear on crayons (for a limited time) and their likenesses will be enshrined in the Crayola Hall of Fame.
"This is definitely the biggest draw in Crayola history," said Brad Drexler, company spokesperson. "For the first time in company history we're giving people the chance to name a Crayola crayon -- to leave a brilliant legacy to the children of the world."
The 16 anonymous shades are found in the new Crayola 96 "Big Box" (priced at about $6) which begins arriving in stores this week. It's the first box expansion for the crayo ?maker in 35 years. The last major introduction came in 1958 when Crayola debuted its now classic 64 box with sharpener.
Included in the 96 box, made up of 80 existing and 16 new hues, are enough shades for the most exotic creations: 18 greens, 16 purples, 15 reds, 12 blues, 11 oranges, 10 browns, seven yellows, two grays, plus silver, gold, copper, black and white.
To enter the Name The New Colors Contest, name suggestions must be mailed, with a one-sentence description of why color names are original, creative and appropriate, to: Crayola New Color Contest, P.O. Box 342, Conshohocken, Pa., 19428, by Aug. 31. Color names will be evaluated on creativity, originality and appropriateness. Winning color names (and their creators) will be announced on the birth date of Crayola crayons, Nov. 9, during a birthday party at Universal Studios-Hollywood.
