CRAY RESEARCH TO USE CHORUS MICROKERNEL TECHNOLOGY IN ITS SUPERCOMPUTER SYSTEMS

 BEAVERTON, Ore., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Chorus Systems, the leader in commercial microkernel operating system technology, announced today the Cray Research Inc. (NYSE: CYR), has licensed its CHORUS/MiX V.4 microkernel-based UNIX system for high-performance computing. Financial terms were not disclosed.
 Cray Research plans to use the Chorus technology to enhance Cray's UNICOS operating system for use across the company's full range of parallel vector and forthcoming massively parallel processing (MPP) computer systems, said Don Mason, Cray Research Software product manager. "The CHORUS microkernel is well-suited to our platforms' high performance architectural characteristics, and the serverization model in CHORUS/MiX matches our requirement for integrating our distributed platforms as a single system."
 CHORUS provides a powerful foundation on which to build next- generation UNIX-based systems, said Hubert Zimmermann, chairman and chief executive officer of Chorus Systems. Chorus' microkernel technology provides a single operating system base that supports a wide range of memory architectures. It also supports distributed or loosely coupled systems in addition to traditional mono- and multi-processor architectures.
 "As the world leader in supercomputing, Cray Research's technology is widely respected as the most advanced high-performance software and hardware available today," said Zimmermann. "Integrating CHORUS for their product lines will allow them to continue to expand their support of open systems and advanced technologies throughout the whole range of supercomputing." Chorus has extensive experience in using the microkernel/server technology model in distributed real-time, embedded, OLTP, highly available and scalable systems," he said.
 "The microkernel/server model is important for integrating diverse hardware architectures," said Mason. "Cray will use this model to integrate our platforms and platforms from other vendors. Microkernels are maturing to the point where industry collaboration on microkernel and server interfaces is needed. Both companies are pledged to support this collaboration," he said.
