CRAY RESEARCH SUPERSERVERS ANNOUNCES PROPOSED DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT WITH SUN'S INTEGRATION DIVISION

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research Superservers (CRS), a subsidiary of supercomputer leader Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), announced today that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: SUNW) for SunIntegration Services to become a reseller of the CRAY SUPERSERVER 6400 (CS6400) system, the SPARC/Solaris-compliant system unveiled today by CRS.
"SunIntegration is aimed at the rightsizing market and addresses the integration needs of commercial customers," said Martin Buchanan, general manager of CRS. "SunIntegration would provide us with an important distribution channel into corporate accounts that need the high-end capacity and the full range of Solaris-compatible systems. We expect to finalize this agreement soon."
SunIntegration is an SMCC organization created to develop and implement rightsizing solutions for customers worldwide. Details of the proposed arrangement were not disclosed, the two companies said.
Buchanan noted that the key to this proposed agreement is the teaming aspect between the two organizations and the variety of integrating subcontractors with which SunIntegration has developed relationships. The proposed agreement is intended to provide a teaming arrangement where CRS could act as a subcontractor, as well as have the ability to work directly with SunIntegration subcontractors, Buchanan said.
"The CS6400 is based on Sun's hardware and runs the Solaris operating environment with Cray's value added RAS features and software products," said Bill Coleman SunIntegration general manager. "The system seems a natural for our third party product program. We look forward to working closely with CRS."
CRS is dedicated to creating the world's leading SPARC/Solaris- compatible computer systems. Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
