CRAY RESEARCH RAISES ESTIMATE FOR 1992
 SALES OF ENTRY-LEVEL SUPERCOMPUTER
EAGAN, Minn., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), raised its estimate for 1992 sales of the company's entry- level CRAY Y-MP EL supercomputer to at least 120 systems, compared with a previous estimate of about 100 systems. Both estimates assume approximately 60 systems to be shipped to Digital Equipment Corp. (Digital) for distribution during the second half of the year, under a distribution agreement announced in January.
With the Digital order and about 30 additional sales by Cray Research, the company reported approximately 90 CRAY Y-MP EL orders during the first half ending June 30.
"We're confident we will achieve our increased target of 120 CRAY Y- MP EL sales in 1992," said John F. Carlson, Cray Research president and chief operating officer. He noted that the entry-level system is helping Cray Research to capture new customers and enter new markets, such as the sale last month to the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. (Freddie Mac), Cray Research's first sale to the financial industry.
In January, Cray Research and Digital announced an agreement granting Digital virtually exclusive worldwide rights to market, sell, and distribute
the CRAY Y-MP EL system starting July 1, 1992. Carlson said that Cray Research will assist Digital and will help sell the systems through fall of 1992 in order to take advantage of all opportunities and complete the transition to Digital's sales and service organizations.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
