CRAY RESEARCH MPP SYSTEM WILL FEATURE INDUSTRY-LEADING IMSL SOFTWARE LIBRARIES

 EAGAN, Minn., Nov. 17 ~PRNewswire~ -- Cray Research (NYSE: CYR) announced today that the company's first massively parallel processing (MPP) system, due out in 1993, will feature the industry-leading mathematical software libraries from IMSL, Inc.
 The IMSL software libraries are collections of optimized mathematical and statistical procedures, or subroutines -- such as sorting, searching, and equation-solving -- that help maximize the performance of a computer system, and speed the development of industry- specific software applications by providing "building-blocks" for the applications.
 "IMSL's decision to make its leading libraries available on Cray Research's MPP system is further proof of the system's exciting performance potential," said Steve Nelson, Cray Research vice president of technology and MPP program leader. Nelson said the company's initial MPP system, code-named T3D, "will be the world's first supercomputer- class MPP machine." Cray Research is creating additional software libraries for the T3D system to complement the IMSL Libraries, he added.
 Nelson said the IMSL Libraries are already available on Cray Research's existing line of CRAY Y-MP parallel vector supercomputers, including the company's top-of-the-line CRAY Y-MP C90 and large-memory CRAY Y-MP M90 systems.
 The IMSL Libraries are an industry standard in FORTRAN mathematical and statistical subroutines for scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. The libraries consist of more than 900 FORTRAN subroutines in two collections: MATH~LIBRARY for applications in general applied mathematics and special math functions; and STAT~LIBRARY for analyzing and presenting statistical data in scientific and industrial applications. Collectively, the libraries include routines for linear systems, eigensystem analysis, interpolation and approximation, differential equations, transforms, nonlinear equations, optimization, statistics, random number generators, and special functions.
 According to Charles W. Johnson, founder and chairman of IMSL, Inc., the IMSL Libraries are the most widely used numerical applications tool in the supercomputing industry. In a recent survey of 21 supercomputing centers, Johnson said, the IMSL Libraries were the only third-party applications package used in all 21 centers. "IMSL is committed to supporting applications developers on the new Cray Research MPP system.
