CRAY RESEARCH MPP SYSTEM INSTALLED AT JAPANESE NUCLEAR POWER AGENCY

EAGAN, Minn., April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- A 128-processor CRAY T3D massively parallel processing (MPP) system from Cray Research, Inc., (NYSE: CYR) has been installed at the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corp., Tokyo, Cray Research announced today.
The installation, resulting from a Japanese government procurement awarded to Cray Research in January, 1994, also includes a CRAY Y-MP2E parallel vector supercomputer system, according to Carl Diem, Cray Research senior vice president, sales and marketing. Terms were not disclosed.
Diem said the two closely linked, air-cooled systems will be used to analyze the safety, reliability and efficiency of nuclear power facilities, including nuclear waste disposal methods, and to explore the applicability of MPP technology to tasks of this kind. The heterogeneous CRAY T3D system will also be made available on a time- shared basis for examination by various Japanese energy-related organizations, universities and others, he said.
The newly installed 128-processor CRAY T3D system has 256 million words (two gigabytes) of memory and a peak performance rating of 19.2 gigaflops (billion calculations per second), he said.
"We are pleased that our new CRAY T3D system will be used for this important research by the Power Reactor and Nuclear Development Corporation and other organizations in Japan," said Diem. "Cray Research is committed to working with this prestigious new customer to achieve its goals."
Cray Research provides the leading supercomputing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems.
