 Cray-Donated Supercomputer
EAGAN, Minn., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cray Research Foundation, the charitable contributions arm of Eagan-based supercomputer company Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), has joined with the Department of Energy to co-sponsor the 1992 National Science Bowl, the company announced today. Cray Research, the major corporate sponsor, will provide $65,000 to underwrite this year's program, as well as provide other in-kind support.
The National Science Bowl is a tournament-style academic competition between teams of outstanding U.S. high-school students. Subjects include: astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering, environmental remediation, mathematics, and physics. This year's competition, the second such annual event, will be held at the Department of Energy (DOE) headquarters in Washington, D.C., April 24 through April 27, the first day of National Science and Technology Week.
"Nothing is more vital to the future of our country's growth and prosperity than encouraging our youth to become a new generation of innovators and scientific pioneers," said DOE Secretary of Energy Admiral James D. Watkins. "The National Science Bowl is a significant program that will provide students who excel in science a forum to demonstrate their knowledge and offer them national recognition."
Regional Science Bowl tournaments began at DOE facilities across the country last Jan. More than 12,000 students representing over 2,000 schools throughout America participated in the regional events. Thirty teams from 28 states, including Puerto Rico, will compete for the National Science Bowl title and related prizes including international and domestic science trips, computer equipment, and free linkup to the National Education Supercomputer, a CRAY X-MP system donated by Cray *research last year to DOE's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, Cal., for its national education outreach program.
"Our commitment to the National Science Bowl helps fulfill the Cray Research Foundation mission of supporting key national science and mathematics education programs," said John Rollwagen, chairman and CEO of Cray Research and chairman of the Cray Research Foundation. "With programs like the Science Bowl, we are right on track in getting the nation's youth interested in advanced studies in science and technology. This program will develop the students of today into the advanced technical thinkers of tomorrow and ultimately will help our nation maintain its technological strength well into the future."
The National Science Bowl program is endorsed by the National Education Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
In May 1990, Secretary Watkins issued a notice that expanded the DOE's education mission. The National Science Bowl is only one of more than 800 DOE-funded programs throughout the nation. Last year, more than one million students, teachers, and parents participated in these programs. In addition to its support of the National Science Bowl, Cray Research supports the National Education Supercomputer Program and supported the 1991 New Mexico Supercomputer Challenge, a statewide educational outreach program operated at the DOE's Los Alamos National Lab.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
