 CRAY RESEARCH IS CORPORATE SPONSOR
OF NATIONAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WEEK
Program is One of Several National Science/Technology
 Efforts Supported by Company
EAGAN, Minn., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of the company's larger effort to increase interest in science and technology, Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), announced today that it will be a major corporate sponsor of National Science and Technology Week, a program designed to raise student and teacher awareness of these fields. Through the Cray Research Foundation, the charitable arm of the company, Cray Research will be one of five such corporate sponsors and has donated $30,000 to the National Science Foundation (NSF), under which auspices the program will be held this week.
The sponsorship funds allow the NSF to conduct annual programs aimed at reaching students through teachers. During National Science and Technology Week, the NSF will hold regional teaching workshops throughout the country, at which teachers learn about special science and math projects that can be incorporated into classroom activities. The focus of this year's regional workshops includes techniques to make science and technology curriculum more exciting, raising career awareness at an early age and encouraging more students of color to become interested in science and technology. In addition, also throughout this year NSF will coordinate program activities with national K-12 science and math teacher organizations: the National Science Teachers Association, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
"National Science and Technology Week is an excellent program for raising awareness of these two important areas," said John Carlson, president and chief operating office for Cray Research and president and chief executive officer for the company's foundation. "National Science and Technology Week's mission is consistent with our own goal of helping to advance elementary and secondary math, science, and technology education. Strong science and technology education today will produce innovative thinkers tomorrow and will help our nation maintain its technological strength."
Nearly all of Cray Research's corporate giving focuses on science and math education, particularly at the K-12 level. In addition to supporting National Science and Technology Week, Cray Research was the corporate sponsor for the 1992 National Science Bowl; donated a supercomputer and provides ongoing technical support to the National Education Supercomputer program based at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; and provides support for the Jason Project, a unique educational program that uses robotic and telecommunications technology to enable students to participate live via satellite video as scientists conduct research around the world. At the local level, Cray Research has educational partnerships with schools and school districts in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
