CRAY RESEARCH IS AGAIN FINALIST FOR NASA QUALITY AWARD
EAGAN, Minn., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR),

announced today that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has chosen Cray Research's Wisconsin Operations, Chippewa Falls, Wis., as one of eight finalists for the prestigious 1992 George M. Low
Trophy -- NASA's Quality and Excellence Award. This is the second successive year that Cray Research has achieved finalist status; last year the company's Manufacturing Division, a single unit of the Wisconsin operations, was selected.
"To be selected again as a finalist for this prestigious award is a tremendous honor for Cray Research," said John Carlson, president and chief operating officer at Cray Research. "This year our entire Wisconsin operations -- including hardware development and engineering, customer service and manufacturing -- was selected for finalist status. This selection underscores the entire operation's quality and productivity improvements, and is a strong reflection of Cray Research's long-term partnership with NASA."
In 1990 the NASA Excellence Award was renamed the George M. Low Trophy in honor of the outstanding space pioneer. The award, established in 1984, recognizes NASA prime contractors, subcontractors and suppliers who demonstrate outstanding quality and productivity improvements within "total quality management" (TQM) programs. The goals of the award are to acknowledge internal quality and productivity practices and TQM processes within NASA and its contractors' organizations, and to share these successes with other organizations associated with NASA.
NASA has been a Cray Research customer since 1981, when the NASA Ames facility received a CRAY-1 system. There are 11 Cray Research supercomputers currently installed at seven NASA research laboratories. Cray Research is unique among the finalists, as its products aren't designed and manufactured only to NASA or government specifications. The same products are used by all 230 Cray Research government, university and commercial customers.
"The idea with TQM at Cray Research is to make quality an ongoing process and a continuous way of thinking in our everyday work," said Les Davis, executive vice president of the company's Wisconsin operations. "We don't see quality as merely something that's done when it is time to win an award -- at Cray Research quality is a way of life."
NASA will announce the ultimate award recipients at the Ninth Annual NASA/Contractor Conference, Oct. 20-21.
Cray Research provides the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
