CRAY RESEARCH ANNOUNCES NEW VERSION OF CHEMISTRY SOFTWARE FOR MOLECULAR MODELING

EAGAN, Minn., Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR) announced today the new release of UniChem, the company's computational chemistry software package that has been in use by industry, research and academia for the past two years.
UniChem uses distributed processing, an increasingly common method of supercomputing that allows a supercomputer to quickly calculate the large numerical problem and a workstation to post-process and visualize the supercomputer's numerical output in the form of easily understood images. In the past, the product was available for SGI workstations only. The new product announced today, UniChem 2.0, supports all workstations running the X-Window System protocol.
UniChem 2.0 also introduces significant new functionality and performance improvements. These improvements, the company said, are important because of the growing use of computational chemistry in the pharmacological, agrochemical, materials, and chemical industries.
There are currently more than 35 copies of the UniChem software package in use worldwide at leading universities, government research laboratories, and at chemical, pharmaceutical and petroleum companies.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
