CRAY RESEARCH ANNOUNCES NEW EUROPEAN BUSINESS STRUCTURE
Move Better Positions Company for Changing European Market
EAGAN, Minn., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research (NYSE: CYR) announced today that it has formed a new European Council and European Operations Committee to move greater responsibility to its European sales regions. The new structure is more consistent with today's changing European business climate and provides enhanced customer focus at the country level and improved strategic focus at the European level, the company said.
Carl Diem was elected vice president of international sales and will chair the company's European Council, chartered to provide strategic and operational direction for Cray Research in Europe and ensure a common European focus. In his new responsibility, Diem, who has been with Cray Research for the past 12 years, will also oversee all international sales efforts in Europe and Asia Pacific. He will report to John Carlson, president and chief operating officer for Cray Research.
Robert Levy was named the vice president of European sales and will chair the European Operations Committee and co-chair the European Council. In addition to Levy's new responsibilities, he will retain his current position as vice president of European Development and continue to build strategic alliances for Cray Research in Europe. Levy has also been with Cray Research for 12 years.
The new European Council includes the general managers of the company's four new sales regions in Europe, as well as the company's chief financial officer, vice president of marketing, and vice president of customer services. Three of the four regions existed under the previous structure, but have been slightly altered. These three are: the United Kingdom/Ireland sales region, headed by Chris Windridge; the Germany/Austria sales region, headed by Dieter Schneider; and the France/Belgium sales region, headed by Michele Neyret. A new sales region, headed by Barry Utting, was established comprising geographies that represent emerging markets for Cray Research including Eastern Europe, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Spain and Switzerland.
All European sales region general managers will sit on the European Operations Committee, the charter of which is to provide sales leadership and customer focus, allocate sales resources and implement sales strategy as set by the European Council.
"We believe this restructuring will result in a more competitive business operation for us in Europe," said Carlson. "Putting more of the management of our business into the hands of those closest to the customer will serve Cray Research well. Each country, each European region, knows its specific marketplace best. We need to capitalize on that knowledge base to impact sales. We now have the right organization in place -- both the structure and the people -- to be even more successful."
At the end of first quarter of this year, Cray Research had 89 systems installed throughout Europe. This install base does not include the CRAY Y-MP EL system, Cray Research's entry-level system that began shipments in first quarter. The company has received more than 60 orders for this system, half of which are for European installations.
