CRAY RESEARCH ANNOUNCES FIRST INSTALLATION WORLDWIDE OF CRAY Y-MP EL SYSTEM

 CRAY RESEARCH ANNOUNCES FIRST INSTALLATION
WORLDWIDE OF CRAY Y-MP EL SYSTEM
EAGAN, Minn., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR) announced today that the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), the Swiss federal institute of technology located in Ecublens, Switzerland, has ordered and will be the first customer worldwide to install a CRAY Y-MP EL system, Cray Research's entry-level supercomputer that is fully compatible with larger CRAY Y-MP supercomputers. The CRAY Y-MP EL system is being installed this month at EPFL; a ribbon- cutting ceremony recognizing this first CRAY Y-MP EL system customer is being held today at EPFL.
EPFL has an elaborate nation-wide network of approximately 3,000 computer systems including workstations, servers, mainframes, and Cray Research supercomputers. This order also includes a CRAY Y-MP 4E system that will be installed this spring and operated as a central compute server. The CRAY Y-MP 4E supercomputer will be networked, via the 800-Mbits/second HIPPI interconnection, to the CRAY Y-MP EL system, which will act as a high-speed file server for the central computers and all the departmental compute servers
on the network. The CRAY Y-MP EL system will transfer data from EPFL's storage system which, today, includes a configuration of 70 Gbytes of a variety of disk type, as well as cartridge tape robot storage systems with data capacity of one terabtye.
This networked supercomputing system will serve EPFL through the 90s. A CRAY-2 system, which EPFL acquired in 1988, also resides on the network and is used as a scientific computing resource for very large problems. EPFL will eventually replace the CRAY-2 system when massively parallel processing technology becomes mature for general-purpose scientific computing.
"We are very pleased to provide EPFL with the computational tools and networking technology for its extensive network, and we are proud to deliver our first CRAY Y-MP EL system as a high-speed file server to this long-time customer," said Bryan Little, vice president of Cray Research's European operation.
"We already have received approximately 50 orders worldwide for the CRAY Y-MP EL system since Oct. when we announced this system's availability and more than forty percent of these orders are from European organizations. This first installation in Switzerland attests to the widespread demand for superior network supercomputing capabilities, and we are pleased to provide these powerful and affordable tools to organizations like EPFL."
"Over the past years we have experienced a tremendous growth in our needs for scientific computing, information storage and data communications, yielding to a rate of doubling the needs every two years!" said Michel Reymond, director
of EPFL's scientific computing center. "Today, we are very pleased to receive the first CRAY Y-MP EL system as a high-performance file server. This system is a leading- edge, integrated, and cost effective solution for information storage requirements. With respect to speed, growth potential, fast networking, standards compliance, storage technology, and data migration to and from different types of disks to our cartridge tape robot storage system, we believe that this computational solution is the best for our network.
"Ever since the installation of our first CRAY-1S system in 1986, our scientists, engineers and industrial partners have made an extensive and successful use of Cray Research technology for advanced research and development," continued Reymond. The broad base of problems conducted at EPFL includes modeling for all engineering sciences: computational fluid dynamics, structural analysis, plasma physics, material technology and related physics, and chemistry. Reymond noted that the CFD simulation of the European space shuttle "Hermes" is a major project currently on-going at EPFL.
"Through Cray Research's advancing network supercomputing technology it has been able to meet our scientific computing requirements for the past six years," said Reymond. "I would like to make note of this mutually successful collaboration between EPFL and Cray Research, which made it possible to host the first worldwide installation of a CRAY Y-MP EL system at EPFL."
Cray Research has 298 systems installed worldwide, including three in Switzerland. There are 48 Cray Research supercomputers installed worldwide that are dedicated to academic research.
On Jan. 14 of this year, Cray Research and Digital Equipment Corporation, Maynard, Mass., jointly announced an agreement granting Digital worldwide rights to market, sell, and distribute the CRAY Y-MP EL supercomputing system. Under the agreement, through June 30, 1992, both Digital and Cray Research will market and sell CRAY Y-MP EL systems. The agreement does not apply to certain limited cases, such as CRAY Y-MP EL systems sold in Japan and to certain government customers.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
