CRAY RESEARCH AGREEMENT TARGETS ENGINE-DESIGN SOFTWARE ON PARALLEL VECTOR, MPP SYSTEMS

 EAGAN, Minn., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- As a result of an agreement announced today, leading engine-design software will run at unprecedented speeds on Cray Research (NYSE: CYR) supercomputers, including the company's first massively parallel processing (MPP) system due out later this year.
 The agreement with AVL LIST GmbH (AVL), Austria, targets a 10- to 40-fold speedup of AVL's FIRE software on Cray Research systems by 1995. Other terms were not disclosed.
 The agreement is important because all of the world's major automakers use Cray Research supercomputers, often with FIRE, to speed up the design of safer, more environmentally friendly vehicles. In addition, few commercial software applications exist today for a new breed of supercomputers -- MPP systems -- which harness hundreds or thousands of microprocessors together to attack a problem. Cray Research has said it expects the company's CRAY T3D system to significantly outperform competing MPP systems.
 FIRE is used to analyze an engine's internal air flow and combustion, as well as automotive air conditioning and engine exhaust -- tasks that are important in light of more stringent standards set by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency and similar agencies worldwide.
