CRAY OFFICIALS SAY T91 FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE ON TRACK,
 T92 OUTLOOK SIMILAR
EAGAN, Minn., Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Speaking before the New York Society of Security Analysts today, John F. Carlson, president of Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), said he is confident the company will achieve its FY1991 revenue and earnings targets. If Cray Research achieves these targets, he said, it will remain one of the computer industry's most profitable companies.
Carlson reminded the analysts that the general economy and the computer industry are going through a difficult period. He said pressure on Cray Research's profit margins will continue in 1992, but stressed that the company remains committed to devoting about 15 percent of revenue to R&D activities needed to maintain Cray Research's industry leadership.
Cray Research will boost its investment in marketing to between 14 and 15 percent of revenues in 1992, Carlson said. He told the analysts that to match 1991 earnings results would require 1992 revenue growth of eight to 10 percent.
While he considers this growth achievable, he said he cannot project an increase in earnings for 1992 at this time.
Cray Research chairman and CEO John A. Rollwagen told the analysts that the company's longer-term growth prospects remain very promising. He said the company will seek to produce new revenue sources by forming cooperative agreements with other computer-industry firms, as it focuses on its expertise as the nation's leading high-performance computing company. He said Cray Research intends to be compatible with all major computing architectures, so that it will remain the leaading supplier of high-performance (performance peak) solutions for the full spectrum of customers using these varied architectures.
Rollwagen said the company continues to invest in new technologies that are expected to increase Cray Research's business opportunities over the next two to three years.
Cray Research, Inc., designs, manufactures, markets, and supports high-performance computer systems for scientific and engineering applications.
