CRAY ANNOUNCES FIRST SYSTEM ORDER IN EASTERN EUROPE CZECH ACADEMY INSTALLS CRAY Y-MP EL SYSTEM

EAGAN, Minn., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Academy of Sciences in Prague, the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic (CSFR), has ordered a CRAY Y-MP EL system, the first order for a Cray Research system from an organization in Eastern Europe. The system will be installed at the academy's Institute of Physics this quarter, Cray Research announced today.
The CRAY Y-MP EL system is the company's entry-level computer system and is compatible with the full CRAY Y-MP product line. The Academy of Sciences, one of the oldest institutions in Europe, is an assembly of about 1,000 elite faculty members from universities throughout the republic. The new system will be used for physics research.
"This is an important global event," said Carl Diem, executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Cray Research. "We are pleased that the Academy of Sciences is taking delivery of a CRAY Y-MP EL system this quarter. We believe this sale will spark further interest in the EL system and our other systems in Eastern Europe."
According to Diem, the academic community in the CSFR and other former Eastern Bloc countries is advanced in theoretical areas, but has lacked the advanced computing power needed for cutting-edge scientific work.
Diem said the Czech sale was made possible by COCOM (the Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Export Controls), a non-treaty organization made up of 17 member countries. COCOM has relaxed export controls to Poland, Hungary and the CSFR, allowing these countries to be treated more favorably and receive advanced U.S. technology products such as high-performance computers for the first time.
"This more favorable treatment has allowed organizations that want Cray Research systems to get them," said Diem. "That's great news for Cray and our customers and users."
"The CRAY Y-MP EL system will open up a new world for us," said Dr. Jaroslav Nadrchal, head of the computer department at the academy's Institute of Physics. "For years our physicists have dreamed of being able to access the power of a CRAY computer, and now we are able to acquire one of our own. This new computer system will allow us to prepare and run vectorized programs, which, for many problems, is much faster than the scalar mode in which we operate today. Acting as a node on our computer network, our Cray will appropriately be used for large- scale computations in the field of atomic and electronic structure of complex solids, simulation of kinetic processes, and in high energy physics.
"We are certain that this first installation of a Cray Research system not only in Prague, but also in Central and Eastern Europe, will show the advantages to the people in industrial research and development," Nadrchal continued. "We believe our installation of a Cray Research system will soon be followed by more installations in our country."
To date, Cray Research has received more than 100 orders for the CRAY Y-MP EL system from organizations throughout the world operating in the academic, aerospace, automotive, chemical, energy and military industries. Of these more than 100 systems, some 50 went to first-time Cray Research customers.
Cray Research, Inc., based in Eagan, a suburb of Minneapolis, creates the most powerful and highest quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
