CRANDALL C. BOWLES JOINS SPRINGS INDUSTRIES AS
 EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT-GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
FORT MILL, S.C., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Crandall C. Bowles will join Springs Industries, Inc. (NYSE: SMI) April 13 as executive vice president-growth and development, Springs chairman and chief executive officer Walter Y. Elisha announced today.
She will continue to serve as a member of Springs Industries' board of directors, which she joined in 1979. Bowles is also a director of the Charlotte Branch of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, Deere & Co., Duke Power Company and Wachovia Bank.
For the past nine years, she has been president of The Springs Company, Lancaster, S.C., a holding company that manages investments and business interests of the Close family, Springs Industries' principal shareowners.
"It is critically important that we accelerate our review and definition of product and market opportunities for the remainder of this decade and beyond," Elisha said. "Crandall Bowles is uniquely qualified to help us meet this challenge. She knows our business, its financial and capital programs and the key strategic issues facing us, and she understands Springs and its various constituencies from a special perspective. Her experience with The Springs Company, as well as with the boards of other corporations, will be invaluable in our strategic planning effort."
Bowles will be based at Springs Industries' headquarters in Fort Mill, S.C., reporting to Elisha. Kevin Maher, vice president-growth and development, will report to Bowles.
Bowles is a graduate of Wellesley College and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was associated with Morgan Stanley in New York for two years, then earned a Master's degree in Business Administration from Columbia University. She joined Springs Industries in 1973 and spent five years as a planning and financial analyst before joining The Springs Company.
She and her husband Erskine, who is founding partner of Bowles Hollowell Conner & Co., live in Charlotte, N.C., with their three children, Sam, Anne and Bill. They are active in a variety of community and civic organizations.
