CRAM'S BROTHER DIES JOGGING ROUND PARK; Tragedy of fitness fan Kevin, 39.

THE brother of former world champion athlete Steve Cram collapsed and died while out jogging, it was revealed yesterday.

Kevin Cram's body was found at the roadside in a beauty spot area popular with runners. It was 36 hours before he could be named. His jogging kit carried no identification.

Last night mystery still surrounded the tragic end of the 39-year-old fitness fanatic. Brother Steve, a track great in the 80s as a world, European and Commonwealth champion at 1,500 metres, was distraught. Steve, a BBC athletics commentator, said yesterday: "This has come as a complete shock to his family and friends.

"It is tragic news for us and words cannot express how we feel at this moment.

"We ask at this difficult time to be left alone to come to terms with such a huge loss."

It is believed that he died from a heart attack.

Kevin was running on the edge of Roath Park, Cardiff, and collapsed as he was heading home.

He is thought to have owned flats in the area.

A neighbour said: "He was the last person you would have expected to have dropped dead.

"He was slim and fit and ran regularly along the streets around here. Everyone is shocked at what has happened."

Kevin was found dead by a passing motorist at about 8.15pm on Tuesday.

As his identity remained unknown, police issued a description and appealed for help.

Kevin, who had bleached blond hair, was dressed in a black top, black jogging bottoms and black and green running shoes.

He was 5ft 10ins and weighed a trim 11stone.

Fellow joggers who use the Roath Park route told of their shock yesterday.

Elliott Price said: "This is unbelievable, I run down the street most nights."

David Briars said: "It is terrible irony that the brother of someone as famous as Steve Cram should die like this."

Neighbour Susan Ward said: "It is terrible that he remained unidentified for so long."

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

An inquiry was under way and a file would be prepared for the coroner.

Officers were still trying to piece together what might have happened.

Anyone who may have seen him on Tuesday night is urged to contact police.
