CP&L REPORTS SECOND QUARTER EARNINGS

 CP&L REPORTS SECOND QUARTER EARNINGS
 RALEIGH, N.C., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Carolina Power & Light

(NYSE: CPL) today reported earnings of 85 cents per share of common stock for the second quarter of 1992, compared to 89 cents per share for the same period last year. Net income for the second quarter of 1992 totaled $69.1 million, compared to net income of $74.9 million for the second quarter of 1991.
The decrease in net income resulted from lower revenues during the second quarter of this year. Operating revenues for the second quarter of 1992 were $621.2 million, down 2.4 percent from the prior year's second quarter. The decline in revenues for the quarter reflected lower energy sales due to mild weather during this period.
For the 12 months ending June 30, 1992, CP&L reported earnings per share of $4.56 and net income of $375 million. This compares to earnings per share of $4.11 and net income of $346.1 million for the same period last year. Operating revenues for the 12 months ending June 30, 1992, totaled $2.7 billion essentially unchanged compared to the same period last year. Tax-related adjustments recorded in the fourth quarter of 1990 lowered earnings for the prior 12-month period.
CP&L serves approximately one million customers in central and eastern North Carolina, an area around Asheville in western North Carolina, and the Pee Dee area of South Carolina.
