Under the agreement, the specific terms of the settlement are confidential.
The litigation began in early 1989. It involved cancellation payments for three generating units that had been planned for CP&L's Harris Nuclear Plant near Raleigh, N.C., that were canceled in the early 1980s. It also involved other issues related to the manufacture of the stream generators.
CP&L filed another lawsuit against Westinghouse in March 1990 involving the steam generators at CP&L's Robinson nuclear unit near Hartsville, S.C., that were replaced during 1984.
 The settlement resolves both lawsuits.
CP&L serves approximately one million customers in North Carolina and South Carolina.
