COURT OF JUSTICE: NOMINATION OF NEW MEMBER STATE JUDGES.

On May 1, the Member States' Permanent Representatives to the EU (COREPER) adopted two Decisions for the nomination of ten new Judges to the European Court of Justice and another ten for the Court of First Instance. The duration of the mandates of the twenty new Judges was determined on April 22 by drawing lots. The new Judges will take up their posts as from their oath-taking ceremony, namely May 11 for the Court of Justice and May 12 for the Court of First Instance.

The following five candidates will be entrusted with the mandate of Judge of the Court of Justice from May 1, 2004 to October 6, 2006: Jiri Malenovsk (Czech Republic), George Arestis (Cyprus), Egils Levits (Latvia), Pranas Kuris (Lithuania) and Anthony Borg-Barthet (Malta); while the five other candidates will be entrusted with the mandate of Judge for the period of May 1, 2004 to October 6, 2009. As for the Court of First Instance, the following five candidates will be entrusted with the mandate of Judge for the period of May 1, to August 31, 2004: Kullike Jurimae (Estonia), Savvas S. Papasavvas (Cyprus), Otto Czucz (Hungary), Irena Wiszniewska-Bialecka (Poland) and Daniel Svaby (Slovakia); whereas the five other candidates will be entrusted with the mandate of Judge at the Court from May 1, 2004 to August 2007. The lack of a Slovenian Judge among the candidates designated is in part due to the absence of a candidate from this country for the Court of First Instance; as such, the Presidency has asked the Slovenian delegation to propose its Judges as soon as possible.
