COSTCO SALES FOR AUGUST

 KIRKLAND, Wash., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST) today reported sales of $593 million for the four weeks ended Aug. 29, 1993, an increase of 14 percent from $523 million in the same four-week period of the prior fiscal year. On a comparable warehouse basis, that is warehouses open at least a year, sales increased 1 percent.
 For the fourth quarter, the 16 weeks ended Aug. 29, 1993 total sales were $2.37 billion, an increase of 14 percent from $2.08 billion during the fourth quarter of the prior fiscal year; and comparable sales increased 2 percent over the prior year's fourth quarter.
 For fiscal year 1993, the 52 weeks ended Aug. 29, 1993 total sales were $7.50 billion, an increase of 15 percent from the prior fiscal year sales of $6.50 billion. Comparable sales for fiscal 1993 increased at a 3 percent annual rate.
 During fiscal 1993 the company opened a total of 20 new warehouses, ending the year with a total of 109 warehouses in operation in sixteen states and Western Canada. Expansion plans for the remainder of calendar 1993 include the opening of fourteen additional warehouse locations.
 On Aug. 23, 1993 the company announced that it would close its Worcester, Massachusetts warehouse as of the close of business on Aug. 29, 1993. A reserve for the anticipated costs associated with this closing will be recorded during the fourth quarter.
 The company's common stock trades on the NASDAQ National Market System under the ticker symbol, "COST".
