CORVETTE CHOOSES GOODYEAR RUN-FLAT TIRE

 CORVETTE CHOOSES GOODYEAR RUN-FLAT TIRE
 DETROIT, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Following 18-months of extensive

evaluations of offerings by three different tire suppliers, the Chevrolet Division of General Motors and Goodyear (NYSE: GT) announced today that Goodyear's Eagle EMT has been selected as the first original equipment run-flat tire for the Corvette sports car.
Approved as a 1995 program with potential availability on selected 1994 models, Goodyear's Eagle EMT (extended mobility tire) will enable the Corvette to travel up to 200 miles at 55 mph at zero inflation pressure, virtually eliminating disabling flats.
GM engineers said the tire passed all of its required testing, including the successful negotiation of a 50-mile slalom course at 40 mph.
Goodyear's technological ability to engineer a tire that would operate successfully on standard wheels was influential in the final decision -- as was Goodyear's ability to keep current and replacement costs affordable, the GM engineers said.
Goodyear said it also offers the most extensive network of retail outlets in the industry for aftermarket services.
Fred Kovac, Goodyear's vice president of tire technology worldwide, said the tire had to perform as good or better than today's ultra-high- performance Eagles. Goodyear tires have been exclusive on new Corvettes since 1978.
"We started with what we think is the best ultra-high-performance tire (Eagle GS-C) on the market and added unique run-flat capability," Kovac said. "The result could have a dramatic impact on the vehicle industry."
The performance of the Corvette on the Eagle GS-C EMT tires with zero inflation pressure has been so impressive, Kovac said, that an air- pressure warning system is required to alert the driver to any loss of pressure. Such systems have been available on Corvettes since 1989.
The two companies said they jointly will introduce the new tires soon to the media for demonstrations.
