OTSU, Japan, Aug. 18 Kyodo

Three students of Ryukoku University died and a fourth was seriously injured when their rental car jumped into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a heavy truck on a national highway in Maibara, Shiga Prefecture late Wednesday, police said.

The three students who died were identified as Hidenori Osaki, 22, Yuki Yoshida, 23, and Satoshi Yako, 21. The fourth student, a woman, was identified as Mami Shinkawa, 20.

Ryukoku University officials said the four were students at the Faculty of Business Administration.

The rental car crashed into the truck after going over the center line on the road, according to the police. The truck driver, Masahito Ikemoto, 40, was unharmed.

The four apparently visited a friend in Nagoya on Wednesday and were returning to Kyoto.
