CORPTECH SURVEY FORECASTS 5 PERCENT HIGH-TECH EMPLOYMENT GROWTH FOR MID-ATLANTIC REGION IN 1994

WOBURN, Mass., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- A just-released survey, taken from the database for the new Regional Technology Guide for the Mid-Atlantic region, reveals the beginnings of a healthy recovery for the region's high-technology manufacturing companies. Corporate Technology Information Services (CorpTech) of Woburn, Mass., the nation's leading resource for high-technology company information, shows an atmosphere of rediscovered optimism among executives, after a flat employment picture last year, and suggests that there is reason for everyone to celebrate.
"This is the kind of information in a new database we really enjoy talking about -- because it means jobs," stated Steve Caldwell, vice president of CorpTech. "High-technology manufacturing in the Mid-Atlantic region is coming on strong, even the defense sector is doing well," he adds. "Pharmaceuticals unquestionably ranks as today's industry leader according to researchers. This sector alone projects a 15.6 percent increase in employment for 1994, after last year's record 33.3 percent. Although pharmaceuticals represents a smaller segment of the region's employees, it's the tip of a mountain of new growth that's taking place."
In fact, the new database, which provides detailed profiles of companies producing high-technology products, shows a growth trend for all 17 classifications in the industry. Biotechnology expects a 15.1 percent increase in employment in the coming year. Computer software, with nearly 400 firms, expects 9.0 percent. Computer hardware companies plan to grow 6.8 percent and defense 6.6 percent. The industries tracked by CorpTech expect the employment change shown below:

The database, available in print, and diskette formats, is especially designed to help make job-searches easy and to provide in-depth data for those involved in research, marketing, and sales. "We also hope that this new database will foster partnerships between private companies and the federal government to develop and commercialize viable technologies in the region," adds Caldwell. "This should help position companies in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia in the competition for federal transition funding, and economic development."
