CORPORATE GRINCH STEALING CHRISTMAS FROM MARTIN MARIETTA WORKERS; SANTA AND HELPERS TO CONFRONT HIM AT GRINCH HEADQUARTERS IN BETHESDA
WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Santa and his helpers will greet employees of Corporate Grinch Martin Marietta Corp. as they arrive at work Monday morning to inform them that their employer is stealing Christmas from 1,000 fellow workers and their families in Southern Ohio.
"I just think they ought to know their employer, operating under the name Martin Marietta, is really the Grinch, and not only is he stealing Christmas, but he stole Thanksgiving, Labor Day and July 4th from them as well," said Santa, referring the company's workers at its Portsmouth, Ohio uranium enrichment facility who have been forced to engage in a work stoppage since June 11.
"We certainly appreciate Santa's help," said John Knauff, president of OCAW Local 3-689 (Piketon, Ohio), which represents the Portsmouth workers. "If anyone can get the company's attention, force them to re-think their intent to gut our labor agreement, Santa's the one who can do it."
So far, Knauff said, Martin Marietta Energy Systems has remained dogmatic in its effort to turn back the clock 30 years, thereby making it possible once more for management people to play favoritism in assigning jobs and overtime.
"Also, by continuing to operate at near-capacity levels, they're putting our community at great risk," Knauff pointed out. "Running the plant with untrained supervisors who're there 12 hours a day, seven days a week, shows they have the same mentality as the operator of a chicken processing plant -- ignore the dangers and lock the people in. A sure recipe for disaster," he said, referring to the September tragedy that killed 25 workers in Hamlet, N.C.
"But here," he noted, "we have something far more dangerous than fire in a chicken plant. We're all locked in on this one, even if they throw open all the doors and plant gates. Doors or chain-link fences don't contain radioactive explosions and releases."
"It really can happen here," he warned, recalling uranium hexafluoride (UF6) releases at the facility last July 4 and a more serious one during a similar situation in 1976 when a release of 800 pounds occurred. "If an incident happens, the M&M Grinch will be stealing many more Christmases from many more families in the whole region."
Santa's entourage will show up at the M&M Grinch headquarters complex at 6801 Rockledge Dr., Bethesda, shortly after 7 a.m., in time to meet company employees who will be arriving for work at 8 a.m., Dec. 23. They will remain on the scene until noon.
