CORNING PLANS TO ACQUIRE BIOSYM TECHNOLOGIES

CORNING PLANS TO ACQUIRE BIOSYM TECHNOLOGIES
 CORNING, N.Y., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Corning Incorporated

(NYSE: GLW) said today it has reached agreement to acquire Biosym Technologies, Inc., a San Diego, scientific software company. Terms were not disclosed.
Biosym specializes in the development, marketing and support of computer-aided molecular design (CAMD) software. Founded in 1984, Biosym markets and distributes its products worldwide through three subsidiaries in Europe and Asia. It employs some 210 people.
Corning President and Chief Operating Officer Roger G. Ackerman said this acquisition allows Corning "to expand into an area of rapid growth with revolutionary implications for every kind of materials science. Biosym has leading-edge researchers in virtually every biopharmaceutical and materials technology, and we see this as a strong entry point into a broader field of scientific information services."
CAMD software streamlines the processes of discovering, developing and testing new drugs, chemicals and materials through research at the atomic level using various forms of computer simulation and graphical manipulation.
Biosym President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Roberts said, "The cost benefits at the research and development level can be so substantial that growing numbers of industrial and academic research organizations are finding CAMD indispensable to raise productivity, to decrease time-to-market, and to identify new product opportunities."
Chairman and founder of Biosym biophysicist Dr. Arnold T. Hagler noted that, "This new relationship will provide exciting opportunities for expanding fundamental CAMD research, securing our continued leadership in the biopharmaceutical and materials arenas."
Biosym has pioneered the development of a spectrum of molecular modeling software products for the biopharmaceutical, polymer and catalysis technology sectors and is currently pioneering software also for the advanced materials market.
