CORNING LAB SERVICES INC. ACQUIRES SOUTHGATE MEDICAL LABORATORY SYSTEM
NEW YORK, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Corning Lab Services Inc. ("CLSI"), a subsidiary of Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW), said today it has acquired Southgate Medical Laboratory System, an independent clinical testing laboratory with headquarters in Cleveland. Terms were not disclosed.
Southgate, established in 1959, operates clinical testing laboratories in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Its annual revenues exceed $10 million.
CLSI said it plans to operate Southgate as part of its Pittsburgh- based Clinical Pathology Facility and MetPath (CPF/MetPath) group.
Thomas D. Moses, president of Clinical Pathology Facility, said Southgate has a reputation for excellent service and a history of consistent sales growth. This acquisition will provide a platform for growth in the clinical-testing market in northeastern Ohio, he said.
Corning's presence in laboratory services has been developed over the past decade through a combination of acquisitions and internal growth. The first company Corning acquired in 1982 was MetPath Inc., a leading U.S. clinical testing laboratory. Today, MetPath is one of the largest clinical laboratories in North America, operating a network of regional laboratories, offering a broad menu of routine and esoteric laboratory services.
In 1990, Corning Incorporated formed Corning Lab Services Inc. as a wholly owned subsidiary. Its businesses operate from more than 40 facilities in nine countries. They include MetPath and CPF/MetPath (clinical laboratory testing for physicians and hospitals), Hazleton Corporation (biological and chemical testing for pharmaceutical, food, agricultural and chemical companies), G.H. Besselaar Associates (worldwide clinical development and marketing support of new pharmaceuticals), SciCor Inc. (clinical laboratory tests and data management for pharmaceutical clients), Enseco (laboratory testing of soil and water for environmental contaminants) and J.S. Pathology PLC (a clinical laboratory in England). In addition, CLSI holds a majority interest in Unilab Corporation, a clinical laboratory testing company, which does business as MetWest in the western United States.
For 1991, CLSIs combined revenues were $1 billion.
