CORNING KERAMIK ANNOUNCES MAJOR MANUFACTURING EXPANSION
WIESBADEN, Germany, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Corning Keramik GmbH will

increase the capacity of its manufacturing facility in Kaiserslautern, Germany, by 50 percent in order to meet strong European demand for its ceramic substrates used at the core of automotive catalytic converters.
The DM 22 million expansion will add 1,500 square meters (16,200 square feet) to the manufacturing facility and will be operational by the first quarter of 1993.
The facility was built in 1986 in anticipation of European auto emissions legislation. European demand for catalytic converter substrates has grown by more than 10 percent each year since 1986. European automobile manufacturers currently purchase 20 million substrates per year.
"With Europe-wide emissions regulations taking full effect in 1993, we believe that demand for catalytic converter substrates will grow substantially through 1995," noted Carl H. Blowers, Corning's European general manager for ceramics, at today's groundbreaking ceremonies.
Ceramic substrates are coated with precious-metal catalysts which convert noxious exhaust emissions to harmless gases and water.
Corning Keramik is a leading supplier of ceramic catalytic converter substrates to the European automotive industry. Corning Incorporated is one of the world's leading suppliers of ceramic substrates and supplies all major automobile manufacturers.
The Kaiserslautern plant is ISO 9001 certified.
