CORBIN NAMED TO LEAD WEYERHAEUSER WOOD PRODUCTS BUSINESSES
TACOMA, Wash., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- William R. Corbin, a veteran forest products industry executive with extensive experience in Western and Southern operations, has been named to lead Weyerhaeuser Co.'s (NYSE: WY) Wood Products businesses, the company announced today.
Weyerhaeuser President Jack Creighton said Corbin will assume his duties Aug. 1. At the August board of directors meeting, Creighton will recommend that the board elect Corbin executive vice president for Wood Products.
William Shields, who led the company's Wood Products businesses previously, died of cancer April 13. Shields joined Weyerhaeuser in April of 1991.
Corbin is currently vice president and general manager, land and timber, and president, IP Timberlands Ltd. for International Paper. When he joins Weyerhaeuser, he will be responsible for the Hardwood Business Group, Engineered Fiber Products, Western Lumber, Southern Lumber, Canadian Lumber, Plywood, Building Materials Distribution and Wood Products Transportation and Purchasing. He will report directly to Creighton and serve as a member of the senior management team.
Corbin was selected after an extensive search that included both internal and external candidates. "Bill's diverse experience in timber, plywood and lumber, both in the West and the South, makes him an excellent choice to continue to accelerate the improvements in our Wood Products businesses," Creighton said.
Corbin graduated from the University of Washington in 1964 and received a master's degree emphasizing industrial administration from Yale University in 1965.
He has spent 24 years in the forest products industry. He was vice president of operations for Vancouver Plywood Co. Inc. before joining Crown Zellerbach Corp. in 1974, where he rose through the Timber and Wood Products organization. In 1982 he was named senior vice president of that group and in 1984 president.
In the late 1980s, Corbin was an executive with an emerging technology business in California and with a redwood lumber manufacturing, construction and distribution company. He joined International Paper in 1991.
"This broad experience will help Bill lead our Wood Products businesses as we become the best forest products company in the world," said Creighton. "Bill wants very much to be a part of that change and to help lead us to that vision."
Weyerhaeuser is the world's largest private owner of softwood timber and one of North America's largest producers of forest products.
