A MAN was murdered and two other people seriously injured in a horrific attack in a tenement flat yesterday.

Police were called to a disturbance in a second-floor flat in Hattonrigg, near Bellshill, Lanarkshire, to find Philip McAlroy, 24, fatally injured.

A man aged 33 and a 30-year-old woman, thought to be Mr McAlroy's girlfriend, were also found with serious injuries.

All three were rushed to Monklands and District General Hospital in Airdrie where doctors battled to save Philip's life - but he died soon after being admitted.

Detectives were holding a bedside vigil at the hospital last night while they waited for the man and woman to recover enough to be interviewed.

Officers were conducting door-to-door inquiries as the shocked local community struggled to take in the news.

Philip shared the flat with his girlfriend in the tenement block in Emerald Terrace.

A neighbour of the dead man's father, also Philip, 40, said he was devastated by the loss of his son.

The neighbour said: "The lad's father came round looking very upset. He seemed totally dazed and I am not sure it has really hit home yet."

Detectives confirmed they were following a positive line of inquiry.
