OF SEAMLESS TUBING PRODUCTION FACILITIES
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Copperweld Corporation today announced that it will begin the next phase of its Vision 100 manufacturing excellence program this month.
The work will upgrade the seamless mechanical tubing production facilities of Copperweld's Shelby Division in Shelby, Ohio.
Vision 100 is a five-year, $94 million capital program that will modernize all of the Shelby Division's production facilities for mechanical steel tubing and expand their capacity for both seamless and DOM (drawn-over-mandrel) products. The first phase of Vision 100, valued at $50 million, was completed early in 1990 and covered the upgrading of the Shelby Division's DOM production facilities.
"The Vision 100 Program was initiated to strengthen our position as one of the world's top producers of mechanical steel tubing," said John D. Turner, Copperweld president and chief executive officer. "The improvements will advance our efforts to provide customers with 100 percent defect-free products, shorter lead times, on-time delivery and superior service."
The first step in upgrading the seamless tubing production line will be a complete renovation of the combustion equipment of its rotary hearth furnace. This will include the installation of new gas-fired burners with spark-ignited pilots, a combustion air blower, baffles, piping and flame safety monitoring equipment, as well as a complete state-of-the-art instrumentation and control system.
The furnace upgrade will allow Copperweld to make substantial improvements in product quality, productivity and safety, Turner said.
Vision 100's earlier expansion of the Shelby Division's DOM tubing production facilities included two building additions; a new weld mill with a supercoiler; two annealing furnaces; a 650,000-pound draw bench; a push pointer; an upgraded finishing line; and expanded shipping facilities.
Other components of the Vision 100 Program include extensive enhancements to the plant's computer systems and an expanded training program to upgrade employee skills to fully utilize the advanced systems and equipment being installed.
In addition to its mechanical tubing operations at Shelby, Copperweld also manufactures structural tubing at plants in Birmingham, Ala., and Chicago. Another Copperweld facility, in Fayetteville, Tenn., is the largest producer of bimetallic wire in the United States. The company is headquartered in Pittsburgh.
