COPPERWELD ANNOUNCES EXPANSION PROGRAM FOR BIMETALLIC WIRE PRODUCTION FACILITY

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 23 ~PRNewswire~ -- Copperweld Corporation, the world's largest producer of bimetallic wire, today announced a $4.4 million expansion program for its Fayetteville, Tenn., plant to satisfy the growing demand for copper-clad steel and copper-clad aluminum wire products in the United States and overseas.
It will be the third major expansion of the facility since it was opened in 1975.
"The expansion underscores our ongoing commitment to the bimetallic wire market," said John D. Turner, Copperweld president and chief executive officer. "It will increase our capacity in several key production areas and will improve the overall flexibility of our operation.
"We will continue to monitor and evaluate market demand for bimetallic wire and are prepared to make additional capital investments to support our present and future customers for these products," Turner added.
The current program will expand Copperweld's capacity to produce bimetallic wire in diameters of .064-inch (14 AWG) and below to meet increasing market demand for these smaller sizes. It will include installation of two finish drawing machines, a breakdown drawing machine, a two-hole bull block, a high-speed rewind machine and ancillary equipment.
"The addition of this equipment will improve our lead time and delivery, already regarded as the industry standard in most of the markets we serve," said Steven E. Levy, general manager, marketing & sales, Bimetallics. "Many of Copperweld's innovative service programs, such as direct order scheduling and dock-to-stock quality certification, will benefit from the greater capacity and flexibility the expansion will provide."
Work on the project will begin before year-end and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 1993. The program has been designed so that it will have no adverse effects on delivery schedules.
Copperweld's most recent expansion at Fayetteville was in 1990 and added 50,000 square feet of space as well as heat treating and drawing equipment and support services. It was valued at $6.0 million and provided the space needed to house the equipment being added in the current expansion. "However, some existing equipment may be relocated to improve production flow," said Al L. Smith, vice president, operations, of the firm's Fayetteville Division.
Copperweld produces two main bimetallic wire product families at the Fayetteville facility, copper-clad steel and copper-clad aluminum. They are sold to a variety of markets including the cable television, telephone, electric utility and electronics industries. Copperweld has also been very successful in developing international markets for these products.
In addition to bimetallic wire, Copperweld also is a major manufacturer of mechanical and structural steel tubing, with plants for these products in Shelby, Ohio; Birmingham, Ala.; and Chicago. The company is headquartered in Pittsburgh.
