COPPER IUD RECEIVES EIGHT-YEAR INDICATION; THE LONGEST-ACTING
REVERSIBLE CONTRACEPTIVE PRODUCT AVAILABLE IN THE U.S.
SOMERVILLE, N.J., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- GynoPharma Inc. and The Population Council announced today that ParaGard(R) T380A (Intrauterine Copper Contraceptive) has received an expanded period of use from six years to eight years. The expanded eight-year life was based upon the continuation of a large, long-term multinational study, conducted by the World Health Organization, demonstrating the safety and efficacy of the extended use.
"ParaGard's expanded eight-year life reaffirms the long-acting benefits of this highly effective method of birth control," said Roderick L. Mackenzie, chairman, GynoPharma Inc. "We hope that this information will encourage physicians to recommend the IUD to appropriate patients," he added.
According to a 1991 nationwide study released by a leading pharmaceutical company, American women who use the IUD report the highest level of satisfaction of any contraceptive users. "Often, once women try an IUD, they love it," said Dr. Daniel R. Mishell Jr., chief of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Southern California Medical Center, Los Angeles.
ParaGard, a third-generation IUD, is flexible and T-shaped, similar to the shape of the uterus. Copper collars are placed on both arms and a copper coil along the stem. The increased copper content in the T380A (compared with earlier copper IUDs) provides added effectiveness. The risk of pregnancy with the copper IUD is as low as the most commonly prescribed type of birth control pill.
Side effects associated with the IUD are few. The most common are increased menstrual flow, lower abdominal pain, or backaches.
The expanded eight-year life makes ParaGard the most economical contraceptive product available. "Over its eight-year life, the cost is less than $2 per month, using the cost of the device only. That's less than the pill, condoms, and even the diaphragm," said Debra Littman, director of marketing, GynoPharma Inc.
GynoPharma Inc., headquartered in Somerville, is devoted exclusively to women's healthcare. The company, which markets ParaGard, the only copper IUD available in the United States, is committed to research and development of contraceptive and gynecological products.
The Copper T380A was developed by The Population Council, an international non-profit organization.
