COORS BREWING CO. REPORTS RECORD BEER VOLUME

GOLDEN, Colo., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Coors Brewing Co., the principal subsidiary of Adolph Coors Co. (NASDAQ-NMS: ACCOB), today announced record annual beer sales for the eighth consecutive year.
For the 52-week fiscal year ended Dec. 27, 1992, the company reported beer sales volume of 19,569,000 barrels, a slight increase over the 19,521,000 barrels sold during 1991. Beer sales during the 12-week fourth quarter of 1992 were 4,361,000, a 2.8 percent increase from 4,241,000 barrels during the fourth quarter of 1991.
Peter H. Coors, vice chairman and chief executive officer of Coors Brewing Co., said, "We are pleased to report that Coors Brewing Company continued to achieve record annual beer sales despite minimal growth in the industry overall. In fact, in the past five years, Coors' unit volume has grown at an annual compound rate of more than 4.5 percent, while the U.S. beer industry has grown at a rate of less than 1 percent.
"Our reported unit volume figures represent Coors Brewing Company sales to wholesalers," he continued. "Our sales look even better when you measure increases in sales of Coors products from wholesalers to retailers, or 'removals' as they are known in the industry. Our 1992 removals were up a relatively strong 2.3 percent from 1991."
Coors noted that growth in sales to retailers did not correspond directly to the company's increase in unit volume because of the company's expanded national distribution system. "To keep up with distributor demand in 1992, we expanded our system of redistribution centers across the country," he explained. "In previous years, some of the Coors volume in these redistribution centers would have been held in distributor warehouses and would have been reported as additional beer sales for Coors Brewing Company.
"The growth we achieved in removals means that we're seeing an increase in demand for Coors' quality products in the marketplace," he said. "That increase is primarily driven by the growth of Coors Light, Coors Cutter, the Keystone brands and Killian's.
"We are particularly pleased with the continued strong growth of Coors Light in the Eastern United States," Coors added. Company officials emphasized that sales volumes of Coors Brewing Co. are not necessarily indicative of the financial performance of Coors Brewing Co. or Adolph Coors Co. Fiscal 1992 financial results for Adolph Coors Co. are scheduled to be reported in mid-February.
