COORS BREWING CO. ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT

GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- W. Leo Kiely III, a former division president of the Frito-Lay subsidiary of PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE: PEP), was named today to the newly created post of president and chief operating officer of Coors Brewing Co. by Peter Coors in an announcement from the company's headquarters.
The appointment, part of a long-planned management restructuring, marks the first time in the brewer's 120-year history that an executive outside the Coors family will serve as president.
Kiely, 46, will direct all operations for Coors Brewing Co., the principal subsidiary of Adolph Coors Co. (NASDAQ-NMS: ACCOB), with a major focus on sales and marketing. He also is expected to be a highly visible spokesman for the company. Kiely assumes duties formerly held by Peter Coors, now chief executive officer of Coors Brewing Co.
"This is a truly momentous day for our organization," said Peter Coors. "The appointment today provides us with the kind of world-class, innovative leadership that ensures our place at the forefront of the brewing industry through the 1990s, and into the next century."
Peter Coors specifically cited Kiely's command of consumer product marketing and long experience in field sales administration as major assets for the Coors company.
"I can't think of a more respected organization, nor any position I would rather be coming into than this pivotal post at Coors today," Kiely said. "I'm excited to join the Coors team at a time when so many breakthrough products and management initiatives are under way."
Kiely said recent product introductions such as Zima Clearmalt, a first-of-its-kind malt beverage, and Coors Extra Gold Light, which uniquely appeals to customers of both full-bodied and light beers, are only the latest examples of Coors' leadership and innovation in brewing, product development and marketing.
Kiely will be responsible for the company's sales and marketing, operations, administration, engineering and corporate affairs.
Reporting to Peter Coors, in addition to Kiely, are the chief financial officer, chief legal officer, chief environmental officer and assistant corporate secretary for the company.
Kiely's appointment follows the Dec. 28 election of Dick Zillmann as executive vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer.
William K. Coors remains as chairman of Coors Brewing Co.
Coors Brewing Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Adolph Coors Co., and the nation's third-largest brewer, last year reported record sales volume of 19.569 million barrels. Fourth quarter sales volume was up 2.8 percent over 1991.
