CONVERSE PRESIDENT REACTS TO LARRY BIRD'S RETIREMENT:
CONVERSE AND BIRD WILL REMAIN A TEAM
NORTH READING, Mass., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Converse(R) President Gib Ford today wished long-time Converse endorser Larry Bird well in his retirement from the Boston Celtics and extended his best wishes to Bird in his new role as special assistant to Celtics' Senior Executive Vice President Dave Gavitt.
"I know how difficult this decision has been for Larry, who loves the game of basketball," Ford said. "He has given Boston and the country 13 years of some of the greatest basketball in the world and we wish him the best of luck in his retirement. Larry's retirement from the Celtics is a tremendous loss to both Boston and the NBA, but we will all still benefit tremendously from his knowledge and love of the game.
"Larry has been with Converse since 1979 and we look forward to continuing our relationship with him," Ford said. "Similar to our arrangement with Julius 'Dr. J' Erving, who has been with Converse since 1975, we plan to continue working with Larry for many years to come. Larry's love of Converse and the game of basketball make us a powerful and dedicated team. As Larry said in his remarks today, Julius is a great leader and continues to be a terrific spokesperson for the game of basketball and for Converse. We know Larry will do the same and will be a worldwide ambassador for Converse and the game of basketball," Ford stated.
