CONTROL DATA SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES COMPREHENSIVE STORAGE MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS

ARDEN HILLS, Minn., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Control Data Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDAT) announced today a comprehensive suite of storage management solutions designed to address an organization's total storage management requirements, including backup, archive, data migration and file serving.
Unlike many storage management products, the Control Data ARIA-Suite offers a modular, yet fully-integrated approach to storage management. By combining innovative ARIA-Suite software with some of the finest robotic storage libraries on the market, Control Data offers storage management solutions tailored to meet the needs of today's client/server networks. The ARIA-Suite enhances Control Data's position as a systems integrator, providing computer solutions worldwide.
The ARIA-Suite consists of five key products: ARIA-BackupPlus, providing unattended, automatic workstation backup; ARIA-Client Migration Manager, offering automatic file migration between clients and servers; ARIA-Server Migration Manager, offering automatic file migration between UNIX server disks and robotic secondary storage libraries; ARIA-UniTree, providing a network storage management server that supports very large data storage requirements; and ARIA-Volume Manager, offering device-independent volume handling for all ARIA-Suite products.
"Today's customers are looking for cost-effective storage management solutions that will increase productivity and protect valuable data assets," said Tim Donaldson, director of Control Data's storage management competency center. "Control Data's ARIA-Suite provides hierarchical storage management solutions that address a wide range of storage requirements, unlike many competitive products that focus on only one area. Also, ARIA is targeted at the department and multi- department levels of an organization, reflecting Control Data's proven ability to support complex, multi-vendor computing environments, worldwide."
 ARIA-BackupPlus
ARIA-BackupPlus offers automatic, unattended backup for a company's heterogeneous UNIX-based and PC-based networks. Once an administrator specifies a schedule and level of backup (full or incremental), ARIA- BackupPlus performs the backup procedures automatically with no intervention required from either administrators or users. However, ARIA-BackupPlus also supports user-directed backup, user-directed archive, and file restoration without assistance from system administration personnel.
 ARIA-Client Migration Manager
Control Data is one of the few companies to offer client file migration capabilities. ARIA-Client Migration Manager provides a cost- effective way to address file management needs by automatically migrating the data part of inactive local files to a server, freeing up space on the workstations' local disks. When files are needed at the workstation, they are either returned to the local disk or accessed through NFS. This process occurs transparently, providing seemingly endless storage capacity for individual users. The ARIA-Client Migration Manager supports UNIX workstations from many of today's major vendors, including IBM RS/6000, DEC 3100, Sun 3/SPARC, Hewlett Packard 9000, Silicon Graphics, and Control Data.
 ARIA-Server Migration Manager
ARIA-Server Migration Manager automatically migrates data from primary disk storage to secondary storage devices such as optical disk or cartridge tape robotic libraries. By utilizing secondary storage, the cost to store each megabyte of data is only 5 percent to 10 percent that of expensive magnetic disks. When a migrated file is accessed, ARIA- Server Migration Manager automatically retrieves the data from secondary storage and returns it to the server disk so the file can be accessed on-line.
 ARIA-Volume Manager
Keeping track of storage media often presents a logistics problem. ARIA-Volume Manager automatically tracks in a single database the current location of all removable cartridge tape and optical disk media. This database handles multiple robotic peripherals, media types, and applications simultaneously, and records operational statistics about these volumes.
The logical tape capabilities of ARIA-Volume Manager make it possible to share stand-alone and robotic storage devices by isolating applications from specific peripherals. This helps leverage the peripherals in support of multiple applications and users, and makes it easier to add new storage peripherals to the network as needed.
 ARIA-UniTree
ARIA-UniTree allows users to store large amounts of data over long periods of time by tracking data and efficiently moving files to specified storage devices. This software solution, designed for networked, multi-vendor computing environments, allows users to significantly increase the utilization of a company's hardware, while allowing the addition of lower cost storage options as needed.
ARIA-UniTree, in combination with appropriate storage peripherals, provides limitless on-line storage capacity for the client supercomputers, compute servers, and workstations in a network. It offers a client/server architecture with a single, central file server and user access via standard NFS and FTP access methods. Using the intelligence of hierarchical storage management, ARIA-UniTree provides automatic, transparent movement of files to and from media at multiple storage levels.
 Pricing/Availability
Three modules of the ARIA-Suite are available immediately:
-- ARIA-Client Migration Manager, ARIA-Server Migration Manager, and ARIA-Volume Manager. ARIA-BackupPlus and ARIA-UniTree will be available by the end of April.
-- ARIA-Suite modules are priced separately based on the quantity of data managed. In the U.S., full storage management services for a typical entry-level solution including ARIA-Backup Plus, ARIA-Client Migration Manager, ARIA-Server Migration Manager, and ARIA-Volume Manager start at $21,500 for a server and an unlimited number of clients.
