CONTROL DATA SYSTEMS AND KEYWORD OFFICE TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCE RESELLER AGREEMENT

ARDEN HILLS, Minn., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Control Data Systems (NASDAQ: CDAT) and Keyword Office Technologies today announced an agreement whereby Control Data will integrate Keyword's KEYpak document conversion software with Control Data's Mail-Hub messaging integration solution. Integration of KEYpak software gives Mail-Hub users true cross-platform, mail-enabled applications -- document attachments sent through Mail-Hub will be converted automatically into the recipient's preferred document format.
"Users on today's enterprise networks are looking for ways to exchange information seamlessly," said James Payne, Control Data's Mail- Hub product manager. "Mail-Hub provides the infrastructure for interconnecting users through messaging technology, and KEYpak allows them to exchange revisable compound documents. The combination of products will provide a true value-added solution for customers."
 Issue of Document Conversion
Document conversion has gradually become linked to the issue of messaging integration, leading to the natural pairing of products such as Mail-Hub and KEYpak.
Companies are increasingly seeking to interconnect disparate mail systems -- using products such as Mail-Hub -- and going beyond that to integrate mail-enabled applications and work flow systems to allow users in the enterprise to work together as if they shared the same office. A critical part of this equation is the ability to share and edit the same documents. Yet in the same way that most companies have a range of incompatible E-mail systems, they also have a range of incompatible word processing systems.
Mail-Hub makes sure the document can get from one user to another regardless of their platform, and KEYpak software ensures that once it gets there, it is converted into the format the user needs. To ensure ease of use, Mail-Hub's X.500 directory service automatically maps the preferred document format of every individual user listed in the directory.
"This is a perfect combination of capabilities," said Bob Gardiner, vice president of sales and marketing for Calgary, Alberta-based Keyword. "An integrated system such as this contributes greatly to improved productivity and significantly reduced costs."
For example, a QuickMail/Macintosh user sends a message with a Microsoft Word document attachment through Mail-Hub to a cc:Mail user on a Windows PC who uses WordPerfect for Windows. Mail-Hub reads the document format, checks the recipient's preferred document format, and uses KEYpak to convert the document automatically. When the message arrives in cc:Mail, it has a WordPerfect file attachment, ready for editing.
 Agreement and Pricing
The agreement between the two companies allows KEYpak to be re-sold as part of the Mail-Hub messaging integration solution. Each Mail-Hub includes one software module complete with all standard KEYpak converters. The price for the KEYpak module integrated on each Mail-Hub ranges from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the number of users.
Mail-Hub pricing is based on the number of users in an organization and the types of services they need. A basic Mail-Hub "backbone," which includes X.400, SMTP and X.500 directory and synchronization, plus two PC mail gateways ranges from $21,000 to $54,000 in the U.S. Additional services in the U.S. market range in price from $2,000 for the installation of an additional PC gateway to $20,000, for a complex needs analysis at a 50,000-plus user installation.
