CONTROL DATA SYSTEMS' NEW 4680 INFOSERVER OFFERS RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE

CONTROL DATA SYSTEMS' NEW 4680 INFOSERVER
 OFFERS RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE
ARDEN HILLS, Minn., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Control Data Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDAT) today introduced the 4680-300 Series InfoServer(TM), a new higher-performance version of the powerful symmetric multiprocessor system that it introduced last year.
The new 4680-300 systems use the MIPS R6000 processor chipset packaged in a single multi-chip module to achieve record levels of performance as measured by industry standard AIM and SPEC benchmarks. The 4680-300 delivers 30 percent to 50 percent more performance than predecessor 4680-200 systems at prices that are 44 percent to 53 percent lower. U.S. prices for the 4680-300 start at under $100,000.
Designed for demanding information management environments where large numbers of users have access to large databases and complex applications, the 4680-300 InfoServer is an ideal platform for off- loading data intensive applications from more expensive mainframe computers. ORACLE(TM), Informix(TM), and other popular database products are available on Control Data InfoServers, as are development tools such as Hewlett-Packard's SoftBench(TM), Control Data's ORACLE-in- SoftBench, and over one thousand applications.
Available in one to four processor configurations, a single processor 4680-300 provides 86 mips, 75.4 SPECmarks, and 78.1 AIMS of processor performance. It also supports 725 AIM user loads -- more than any other single processor system. In a four processor configuration, the new InfoServer delivers 344 mips and a record-setting 289.3 SPECthruput.
"The AIM and SPEC data clearly indicate that this is an excellent multi-user system, well suited for the demands of large scale information management applications," said Charles Horton, director of InfoServer product marketing. "In addition to achieving the best AIM performance ever measured on a single processor system, the multiprocessor configuration delivers the best price/performance in its class."
The 4680-300 is binary compatible with the entire line of Control Data 4000 Series of computers, which range from inexpensive desktop systems to the high end 4680. All Control Data 4000 systems run EP/IX, Control Data's production-oriented implementation of UNIX. EP/IX complies with POSIX 1003.1 and XPG3 standards, and provides the performance and functionality typically found only in proprietary mainframe operating systems.
In addition to providing high performance computational capabilities, the 4680-300 InfoServer supports the large memory and storage configurations required to effectively use this power. Memory sizes of up to 1GB are supported, and up to 350GB of disk storage can be directly attached.
A wide range of high performance, high capacity storage devices are supported by the 4680-300, including a sophisticated Disk Array Subsystem which can provide continuous access to data even in the event of a disk failure. A variety of high capacity tape libraries and optical disk libraries are also available to satisfy high-capacity near- line storage and backup requirements.
U.S. pricing for a single processor 4680-300 with 128MB of memory starts at $98,750, and a system with 256MB of memory is priced at $109,750. Additional processors are priced at $30,000.
Beta units of the 4680-300 are currently installed, and production units will be available in October. Upgrades to this higher-performance technology will also be available to existing 4680 customers.
