CONTROL DATA'S GOVERNMENT SYSTEMS BUSINESS ACQUIRES BARRIOS TECHNOLOGY
MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Control Data Corporation (NYSE: CDA) and Barrios Technology, Inc. announced today that they have concluded an agreement that establishes Barrios Technology as a wholly owned subsidiary of Control Data's Government Systems Group. Terms for the acquisition of the privately held engineering services and systems integration company, which had revenues of $25 million in 1991, were not disclosed.
Based in Houston, Barrios Technology provides information services and systems integration to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its associated contractors. It was founded in 1980 to train and supervise paraengineers in flight design and orbital mechanics for Space Shuttle missions.
Having pioneered application of the paraprofessional concept to engineering tasks, Barrios Technology has grown to provide many engineering services, computer applications and metrology to the space community. Key Barrios Technology contracts currently support the Space Shuttle and Space Station Freedom programs, as well as a variety of other space-oriented programs. Barrios Technology employs approximately 400 people.
Barrios Technology will become part of Control Data's Government Systems Group, a business that traditionally has focused on electronic information systems for defense and aerospace markets. Government Systems plans to grow in part by applying its information management technology to civilian government agencies.
"Control Data plans to complement its growing defense business with rapidly expanding opportunities in non-defense government markets," said Roger E. Handberg, president of Control Data's Government Systems Group. "In adding Barrios Technology to the Government Systems Group, we achieve market penetration in the civilian government arena and create new core competencies much more quickly than we would through internal development. Barrios Technology is a premier player."
 H. Ray Barrett, Barrios Technology's chief executive officer, said, "Since its creation, Barrios Technology has moved through several stages of growth. Our agreement with Control Data is the next stage of our company's development. It provides us with a marketing synergy which will ensure our continued growth."
"Barrios Technology is a high-quality organization with outstanding people and super growth potential," said George J. Hubbs, vice president of Advanced Systems in Control Data's Government Systems Group. "This acquisition will expand Control Data's presence in the NASA marketplace."
As a wholly owned subsidiary, Barrios Technology will retain its identity in the marketplace. Contractual relationships with customers will remain unchanged, existing teaming agreements will proceed as planned, and Barrett will act as a consultant to ease the changeover.
Control Data Corporation applies computer technology to meet customers' specialized computing and information management needs. The company consists of three primary businesses: Information Services, Government Systems and Computer Products. Government Systems provides electronic information solutions to defense and civil governments worldwide.
