CONTRACT AWARDED FOR PORT HURON TUNNEL APPROACHES

DETROIT, June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- A contract valued at approximately $5.0 million has been awarded to Posen Construction Inc. of Utica, Mich., to construct the approaches for the Port Huron/Sarnia Rail Tunnel under the St. Clair River in Port Huron, Mich.
In making the announcement, Jim Anders, chief of design and construction, U.S. properties, said, "We're extremely happy to see this project move forward right on schedule." Approximately 75 U.S. workers will be employed to build the o?rt Huron approaches estimated to take one year for completion.
Canadian workers are already at work in Sarnia where construction has recently begun.
The new tunnel will be 80 feet north of CN North America's century- old Port Huron/Sarnia rail tunnel, too small to accommodate the new double-stack container trains and multi-level rail cars.
When the new tunnel is opened for traffic in late 1994, the costly barge operation will be eliminated and 12 full hours of transit time between Chicago and Toronto will be cut. Customers will benefit from this efficiency. The elimination of the barge operation will also free valuable Port Huron riverfront property for development.
