CONTINUED STRONG TRAVEL ACTIVITY DRIVES OPENING OF SECOND RAND McNALLY STORE IN L.A.
LOS ANGELES, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Rand McNally opened its second Map & Travel Store here last week at Century City Mall -- a move that company officials say was driven by continued strong interest among consumers in regional travel and tourism. The Map & Travel Store in Century City Mall -- one of 23 Rand McNally stores nationwide -- is the company's fifth store in California, according to Ted McNally, great-great grandson of the company founder. "About 20 percent of our total annual sales are from the California stores," McNally said. "Further, one-third of all the U.S guide books we sell are California-related. We attribute this to the rich diversity of California's tourist attractions, Los Angeles' record as one of the nation's top travel destinations, and the large presence of international tourists in the region," he said. "Across the board, travelers are seeking more value from their business trips and vacations," McNally said. "That means more business for us, because our products help in planning trips and making them more productive and enjoyable." McNally said he predicts that the Century City store -- located in one of the top five malls in the United States -- has the potential to be one of Rand McNally's highest volume stores. The company, which has operated retail stores since 1910, began expanding its chain in December 1989. Other California locations include Costa Mesa, San Diego, San Francisco, and the Glendale Galleria. Although the retail industry in general continues to struggle through difficult times, Rand McNally officials cite increasing interest in events around the world among consumers as another factor for their continued success. "Our stores are regarded as THE resource for educational tools that help you learn more about the world at large, or areas close to your own back yard," McNally said. Even so, McNally said the current retail climate demands more than just name recognition to guarantee success. "It's true that the Rand McNally name is synonymous with maps and has a long-standing reputation for quality," he said. "But the key to our success is the depth and variety of products that every store carries," he said. Rand McNally Map & Travel Stores carry more than 8,000 map, travel and geography-related products, including 30 styles of globes, a full assortment of international and domestic travel guides and maps, specialty gifts, and travel necessities. "Our assortment makes it easy for the consumer to find the finest in what they need," McNally said. Rand McNally, which was founded in 1856, is privately held and operates six businesses, including: the world's largest commercial map maker; the world's largest producer of airline tickets and baggage tags; the largest national chain of retail map-and-travel accessory stores; North America's leading provider of mileage and routine information to truckers and shippers; America's third-largest, full service book and computer software manufacturer; and a consumer catalog operation featuring hundreds of map, travel and geography related specialty gifts. -0- 7/27/93 /CONTACT: Bonnie Ryan of Rand McNally Corporate Communications, 708-329-2295/
