CONTINENTAL BANK PROMOTES TWO EXECUTIVES TO VICE CHAIRMAN; WILLIAM M. GOODYEAR, MICHAEL J. MURRAY TO STAND FOR ELECTION TO BOARD IN APRIL

 CHICAGO, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Continental Bank Corp. (NYSE: CBK) announced today that it has promoted two executive vice presidents, William M. Goodyear and Michael J. Murray, to the position of vice chairman. Both executives are members of Continental's six-person Management Committee, which oversees all of the organization's businesses.
 Goodyear, head of Continental's private banking, distribution and Chicago metropolitan banking departments, and Murray, head of Continental's corporate banking business, also have been nominated to stand for election to the board of directors at the annual stockholders meeting on April 26.
 Goodyear, 44, has spent his entire career at Continental after joining the bank in 1972. Prior to his current assignment, which began in 1991, he spent five years in London running Continental's international investment banking and offshore securities business.
 Goodyear was appointed vice president in 1977, became manager of the bank's West Coast regional offices in 1979, was named a senior vice president in 1984 and was named executive vice president in 1985.
 He received a bachelor's degree in 1970 from the University of Notre Dame, and an M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School of Dartmouth College in 1972.
 Murray, 48, joined Continental in 1969, and was appointed a vice president in 1975. He was named manager of the bank's East Coast regional offices in 1981, and in 1984 was appointed a senior vice president, responsible for Continental's Chicago/Midwest commercial banking business. He became an executive vice president in 1985.
 In 1991, Murray was put in charge of the corporate banking department, which includes corporate finance, relationship management, portfolio management, real estate and the equipment leasing and insurance divisions.
 He received a bachelor's degree in 1966 from the University of Notre Dame, and an M.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1968.

Morley, former president and director of American Express Co.; Linda Johnson Rice, president and chief operating officer of Johnson Publishing Company, Inc.; John M. Richman, of counsel to the law firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz; Gordon I. Segal, president and chief executive officer, Crate & Barrel; and James L. Vincent, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Biogen, Inc.
 The current inside directors are Chairman Thomas C. Theobald and Vice Chairman Richard L. Huber.
