CONTINENTAL AIRLINES JOINS GM CARD AS CORPORATE PARTNER; CARDHOLDERS CAN EARN DOUBLE BY BOOKING AIR TRAVEL

DETROIT, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Continental Airlines has joined the GM MasterCard as a corporate parnter, enabling GM Card holders to double their earning power toward a new GM car or truck when they book air travel on Continental, announced Ronald N. Zebeck, General Motors' (NYSE: GM) managing director of credit card operations.
The GM Card was introduced in September 1992 and became the fastest- growing credit card in history, obtaining 1 million accounts in less than one month. To date, the GM Card has obtained nearly 5 million accounts with more than 6 million GM Cards in the wallets of Americans. GM Card holders have already earned more than $250 million in GM Card rebates and, during the past eight months, more than 20,000 have used their GM Card earnings toward the purchase or lease of a new GM car or truck.
Every time GM Card holders use the GM Card to purchase Continental Airlines travel, they receive a 5-percent bonus rebate in addition to their 5-percent GM Card rebate earnings. The GM Card's other corporate partners who also contribute a 5-percent bonus rebate include Mobil Oil; Marriott Hotels, Resorts and Suites; Courtyard by Marriott; Fairfield Inns; Marriott Ownership Resorts; Avis; and MCI.
There are no restrictions on corporate partner earnings, enabling GM Card holders to actually exceed the GM Card's $500 per year/$3,500 over seven years earnings cap and the GM Gold Card's $1,000 per year/$7,000 over seven years earnings cap. When cardholders use the GM Card to make purchases other than from corporate partners, they earn 5 percent of the transaction amount in their rebate accounts.
GM Card earnings can be applied toward the purchase or lease of new GM vehicles from Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac or GMC Truck, above and beyond any discounts or rebates available on GM vehicles at the time of purchase.
"We congratulate Continental Airlines in its highly successful reorganization and welcome the air carrier into the GM Card family as a corporate partner," Zebeck said. "We strategically select corporate partners who have a broad appeal among GM Card holders. The addition of Continental provides them with a means to double their earning power when booking air travel for both business and pleasure."
Continental Airlines services 194 airports around the world. Continental's "Business-First" international service is rated the best transatlantic business class among all U.S. airlines by Conde Nast Traveler magazine. In addition, the independent marketing research firm J.D. Power & Associates recently ranked Continental as having the second most-preferred long-haul domestic service.
"This is an exciting time for Continental, and we look forward to immediately joining the GM Card family as a corporate partner," said Timothy G. Brier, vice president of marketing and advertising for Continental Airlines. "This program enables GM Card holders to double their GM Card earnings when booking domestic and international air travel through Continental with the best service in the business."
