CONTINENTAL AIRLINES BEGINS DAILY SERVICE BETWEEN NEWARK AND MADRID
CEO ROBERT FERGUSON CITES FURTHER GROWTH PLANS
NEWARK, N.J., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Continental Airlines CEO Robert Ferguson today joined a group of New Jersey business and political leaders to inaugurate the airline's new daily, non-stop service between Newark and Madrid, Spain.
As part of his opening statement, Ferguson spoke of the carrier's commitment to further domestic and international expansion at Newark, including: previously announced service to Munich beginning in June; additional daily frequency to London also scheduled to begin in June; and recently started service to Mexico City and St. Louis. The airline will also begin service to Phoenix and Minneapolis in February.
The result of this and other expected expansion will mean the addition of up to 1,000 new jobs, he said. More than 150 new employees have already been added to the airline's local workforce, bringing the current number to nearly 6,300. Another 100 positions are presently in the process of being filled.
Continental Airlines is the largest private employer in Newark, and one of the largest in New Jersey.
"We are dedicated to our previously stated goal of continuing to build Newark International Airport into the pre-eminent international departure point in the Northeast," said Ferguson.
"The Madrid start-up adds to Newark's reputation as the most convenient departure point for international travelers from the metropolitan area. It is also the only direct service to Spain from Newark," he said.
The Madrid flight will depart Newark daily at 8 p.m. and arrive at Madrid's Barajas Airport at 9 a.m. Daily service from Madrid will depart at 11:45 p.m. and arrive at Newark at 1:45 p.m.
Continental Airlines is Newark International Airport's largest carrier, moving nearly 10.5 million passengers, annually, through Terminal C on its 265 daily jet and commuter flights. The airline currently flies to 68 destinations from Newark. In addition to Madrid, Continental's European destinations include: London, Paris and Frankfurt.
