CONSUMPTION OF ELECTRICITY HITS RECORD LEVEL IN 1991
HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumption of electricity in Pennsylvania during 1991 hit a record level of 115.7 billion kilowatt-hours (kwh), the Pennsylvania Electric Association (PEA) said today.
The 1.2 percent increase over previous record levels of use in 1990 was experienced despite a 3 percent decline in industrial consumption, reflecting in the main a loss of 1,087 industrial customers. The loss of industrial customers was the first experienced by Pennsylvania's 11 investor-owned electric utilities since 1986.
Average residential use during 1991 was 8,511 kilowatt-hours, also a record. The figure for average residential use includes all customers, including those in all-electric residential units. For customers without electric space or water heating, average use was closer to the 1990 figure of about 6,800 kilowatt-hours, slightly more than 550 kwh per month.
Last year also witnessed the largest contribution of nuclear generation to total system output. Pennsylvania's nine nuclear units contributed 36.6 percent of total generation in 1991, compared to 34.6 percent in 1990. Oil accounted for 2.2 percent and hydroelectric power 0.9 percent, the latter testimony to drought conditions prevailing in the commonwealth during 1991.
PEA is the trade association of the 11 investor-owned electric utilities in Pennsylvania. These utilities provide electric service to 95 percent of the state's population and supply about 98 percent of the electric energy consumed in the commonwealth.
