CONSUMERS POWER SETS ELECTRIC SENDOUT RECORD FOR MARCH

JACKSON, Mich., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan's improving economy and slightly colder than normal temperatures caused Consumers Power Company's electric customers to use a record amount of electricity for March. The new March record of 2.9 million megawatt-hours is 5 percent higher than the former monthly record established last year.
Michigan's largest utility ends the first quarter of 1993 with all- time electric sendout records for January, February and March.
"The fact that customers are increasing electric demand is a positive sign that Michigan's economy is on the rebound, and that vehicle manufacturers have increased production levels," said Fred Buckman, president and chief executive officer of Consumers Power.
On five separate days during March electric demand reached levels surpassing the former March hourly electric peak demand record. The new March hourly peak demand record of 4,908 megawatts is 2.3 percent higher than the former record set last year.
Temperatures during March averaged approximately 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit below average.
Consumers Power Company, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), is Michigan's largest natural gas and electric utility serving almost 6 million of the state's 9 million residents in 67 of the 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
